Valencia Nightlife Guide: Best Areas, Bars and Clubs

Valencia Nightlife Guide: Best Areas, Bars and Clubs

Ruzafa cocktails, Carmen clubs, and rooftop vibes: your map to Valencia after dark

Valencia nightlife is known for its relaxed atmosphere, late evenings and wide variety of bars and clubs. Instead of having one single nightlife district, the city has several areas where you can go out, each with its own atmosphere. Ruzafa is popular for its creative atmosphere, cocktail bars and smaller venues, while Cánovas is known for its bars, pubs and clubs. Whether you are looking for a relaxed evening with drinks or want to dance until late, Valencia has something for different types of nights out.

After spending time exploring Valencia and its nightlife, I would say that Ruzafa and Cánovas are two of the best areas to start your night. They both have plenty of places within walking distance, but the atmosphere is quite different. Ruzafa is my favourite when I want to start with a drink somewhere relaxed and discover different bars. Cánovas is a better choice when I want the night to become a little more lively and eventually end up dancing. If you are travelling alone, both areas can also be great places to meet people, especially if you combine your night out with a Valencia pub crawl.

What Is Valencia Nightlife Like?

Before choosing where to go, it is good to know what to expect from nightlife in Valencia. The city generally has a later nightlife schedule than many other European cities. People often have dinner quite late, meet friends for drinks afterwards and only go to a club later in the evening.

This means you should not be surprised if a bar or club feels quiet when you arrive early. The streets and venues become much busier later at night. According to Visit Valencia, the city has a wide range of nightlife options, from pubs and cocktail bars to clubs and live music venues.

One of the best things about Valencia nightlife is that you can easily combine different types of places in one evening. You could start with dinner in Ruzafa, have a few drinks in different bars and then continue to a club. You do not have to decide on your entire night before you leave your apartment.

The Best Areas for Valencia Nightlife

Valencia has several neighbourhoods that are popular for going out. El Carmen, the Marina, Benimaclet, Ruzafa and Cánovas all offer different nightlife experiences.

For this guide, we are focusing on Ruzafa and Cánovas. Both are easy to explore on foot and offer plenty of options for an evening out!

Ruzafa: A Creative and Social Night Out

Ruzafa, also known as Russafa, is one of the most popular neighbourhoods in Valencia. The area is known for its restaurants, cafés, independent shops, cultural spaces and nightlife. It has a younger and creative atmosphere, and you will find both locals and international visitors here. Many streets are filled with terraces and small bars, making Ruzafa a great place to start your evening. Visit Valencia describes Ruzafa as one of the city’s trendiest neighbourhoods, known for its multicultural and alternative atmosphere. If you do not want a typical tourist night out, Ruzafa is definitely an area I would recommend exploring.

4 Bars to Visit in Ruzafa

  1. Olhöps Craft Beer House

If you enjoy beer, Olhöps is a good place to start your night in Ruzafa. The bar focuses on craft beer and offers something different from the usual cocktail bars you find around the city. It is a relaxed place to meet friends, have a drink and start your evening before moving on to another bar.

Best for: craft beer and a relaxed start to the evening.

  1. Ubik Café

Ubik Café is one of the more unusual places in Ruzafa. It combines a café, bookshop and cultural space, creating an atmosphere that feels very different from a traditional bar. It is a good option if you want somewhere where you can actually sit down and have a conversation. Depending on the evening, there can also be cultural events, music or other activities. For someone travelling alone, this kind of place can also be a comfortable first stop before going somewhere busier.

Best for: a relaxed drink, conversations and culture.

  1. La Madriguera

If cocktails are more your thing, La Madriguera is worth checking out. The cocktail bar is located on Calle de Cádiz and has a more intimate atmosphere. It is a nice option for the beginning of a night when you want to take your time with a drink rather than immediately go somewhere loud. I would choose a place like this if I was going out with someone and wanted to actually talk and enjoy the first part of the evening.

Best for: cocktails and a more intimate atmosphere.

  1. Café Berlin

Café Berlin is another option for people who enjoy music and a more alternative nightlife atmosphere. One of the things I like about Ruzafa is that going out does not always mean going straight to a huge nightclub. Smaller venues like this allow you to discover a different side of Valencia nightlife. You can have a drink, listen to music and then decide where you want to go next.

Best for: music and alternative nightlife.

How to Spend a Night in Ruzafa

The best way to experience Ruzafa is not necessarily to choose one bar and stay there all night. Start with dinner somewhere in the neighbourhood and then choose a bar for your first drink. From there, you can walk around and see which places look interesting.

For example, your evening could look something like:

Dinner → first drinks → cocktail bar → another bar → club

The fact that many places are relatively close together makes Ruzafa ideal for bar hopping. You can easily change your plans if somewhere is too busy or simply doesn’t have the atmosphere you were looking for.

Cánovas: Bars, Pubs and Clubs

While Ruzafa has a creative and alternative feeling, Cánovas is a little more traditional when it comes to going out in Valencia. The area around Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo is one of the city’s established nightlife areas. You will find plenty of bars, pubs and clubs nearby, which makes it a convenient area if you want to spend most of your night in one neighbourhood. Cánovas can feel a little more dressed-up than Ruzafa, although you certainly do not need to dress extremely formally to enjoy the area.

For me, Cánovas is especially good when the main goal is to have drinks and eventually go dancing.

4 Bars to Visit in Cánovas

  1. The Jungle

The Jungle is a lively bar around the Cánovas area and a good option if you want to start your night somewhere energetic. It works well for groups and is the kind of place where you can have a few drinks before deciding where to go next. Because there are several other venues nearby, you can easily continue your night somewhere else afterwards.

Best for: groups and a lively atmosphere.

  1. Apotheke

Apotheke is a cocktail bar around Cánovas and is a good choice if you prefer cocktails over a traditional pub. It is a nice place to start the evening before moving towards busier venues later at night. If you are looking for somewhere to sit down, have a proper drink and talk before going out dancing, this can be a good option.

Best for: cocktails and starting your night.

  1. St. Patrick’s Valencia

For a more casual atmosphere, St. Patrick’s is an easy choice.

The Irish pub attracts an international crowd and is a good place to have a beer, watch sports or meet people before continuing your night.

It is also the kind of place where you do not need to worry too much about dressing up.

Best for: beer, sports and a casual night out.

  1. Havana Cánovas

If your evening is moving towards dancing, Havana Cánovas is one of the venues to consider. Located close to Plaza de Cánovas, it offers a more typical club atmosphere and is a natural option for finishing your night after visiting some of the bars in the area. For current events and opening information, it is always a good idea to check the venue’s own website or social media before going.

Best for: dancing and a late night.

Ruzafa or Cánovas: Which One Should You Choose?

If you only have one night to explore Valencia nightlife, deciding between Ruzafa and Cánovas can be difficult. The easiest way to choose is to think about what kind of night you want.

Choose Ruzafa if you want:

  • A creative and relaxed atmosphere
  • Smaller bars
  • Cocktails and craft beer
  • More alternative music
  • A younger and international crowd
  • An evening of walking between different bars

Choose Cánovas if you want:

  • More traditional nightlife
  • Pubs and cocktail bars
  • A lively atmosphere
  • More mainstream music
  • Dancing
  • Several nightlife venues close together
  • Party fancy

Personally, I would choose Ruzafa for a relaxed start to the evening and Cánovas if I knew I wanted to end the night dancing.

But there is no reason why you cannot experience both during your time in Valencia.

Tips for a Night Out in Valencia

Start Your Night Later

One of the biggest differences you may notice is that nightlife starts later than you might expect. Don’t worry if the streets seem quiet early in the evening. Give it some time and the atmosphere will change.

Explore More Than One Bar

Don’t feel like you have to stay in the first place you visit. Especially in Ruzafa and Cánovas, there are many venues close to each other, so you can easily move somewhere else if you want a different atmosphere.

Check Opening Times

Opening hours and events can change, especially during holidays and the summer season. Before going somewhere, check its current social media or website to make sure it is open and to see if there is a special event that night.

Don’t Overplan

One of my favourite things about going out in Valencia is that you don’t necessarily need to plan everything. Choose an area, pick somewhere for your first drink and see what happens from there. Sometimes the best nights are the ones where you discover a place you had not planned to visit.

Final Thoughts on Valencia Nightlife

Valencia nightlife is much more than going to one club and staying there all night. The city has different neighbourhoods and each one offers something different.

Ruzafa is a great choice if you want creative bars, cocktails, craft beer and a more relaxed atmosphere. Cánovas is better suited to people who want pubs, cocktails and a lively night that can eventually turn into dancing.

If you are visiting Valencia for the first time, I would recommend exploring both areas if you have enough time. Start your evening somewhere relaxed, try a few different bars and don’t be afraid to change your plans.

And if you are travelling alone, remember that you do not have to experience Valencia nightlife by yourself. Joining a Valencia pub crawl can be an easy way to meet other travellers while discovering some of the city’s nightlife.

Whether you are looking for cocktails in Ruzafa, a pub in Cánovas or a club to finish the night, Valencia nightlife has plenty to offer. The most important thing is simply to choose an area, go out and enjoy the evening!
